Defense of the Ancients (commonly known as DotA) is a custom made scenario intended for the real-time strategy gaming Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, World of warcraft III: The Frozen Tub, based on the " Century of Strife" map intended for StarCraft. The objective of the situation is for every single team to destroy the opponents' Ancients, heavily protected structures at opposing edges of the map. Players use powerful devices known as characters, and are helped by germane heroes and AI-controlled competitors called " creeps". Just as role-playing games, players gain levels their characters and employ gold to obtain equipment during the mission. The scenario originated with the " World Editor" of Warcraft III: Rule of Mayhem, and was updated upon the release of its expansion, The Freezing Throne. There have been many different versions of the unique concept; the most popular being DotA Allstars, which will eventually was simplified to DotA with all the release of version 6. 68. This unique scenario continues to be maintained by simply several experts during advancement, with the current publicly anonymous developer called " IceFrog" developing the overall game since 2005. Since its original release, DotA has become a characteristic at several worldwide tournaments, including Courant Entertainment's BlizzCon and the Asian World Web Games, plus the Cyberathlete Beginner and CyberEvolution leagues; Gamasutra declared that DotA was perhaps the the majority of popular " free, non-supported game imod in the world". Valve Corporation is currently making a sequel, Dota 2 .
